The Plains Hotel - www.plainshotel.com

The Plains Hotel was the center of society and hospitality in Cheyenne for many years. Built in 1911, its handsome architecture proclaimed a vigorous optimism and confidence in the future of Cheyenne. Over the years, however, The Plains had declined into a shadow of its former self. As the result of a public spirited investment by Mr. Mick McMurry of Casper, Wyoming and the development services of the Equipoise Corporation, The Plains Hotel was renovated from top to bottom, including all its 132 rooms, new restaurant, coffee shop and meeting facilities. It is now the anchor of an enthusiastic new level of activity and optimism in Cheyenne's downtown.

Colony Building

The Colony Building, built in 1922, began as a genteel, Barbizon-style residence The Colony provided a reputable "clean, well lit place" for single women who worked in the downtown area and included such quaint amenities as a sitting room, with fireplace, where residents could host gentlemen callers. As the years passed and the need for such a facility diminished, the Colony fell into disrepair. Renovated in 1995, the Colony was converted into Class A offices and is now an integral part of Cheyenne's flourishing downtown professional community.

Carey Bros. Building

The Carey Bros. Building is a one-story commercial building that is divided into seven bays. Built in 1917 by the prominent Carey family, it incorporated a formidable vault with triple thick masonry and steel walls and a poured concrete ceiling reinforced with railroad rails. Former Cheyenne Mayor and dairyman Archie Allison conducted a side business of lending to persons of character from this location. A number of uncoordinated and unsympathetic remodellings left the Carey Bros. Building with a mish-mash of conflicting facades and dysfunctional floor plans; its renovation rationalized the floor plans and harmonized the facade treatments, restoring many of the Building's attractive and functional features.

H. P. Hynds Building - www.thehyndsbuilding.com

The H.P. Hynds Building was built in 1919 by noted Cheyenne entrepreneur and philanthropist Harry Hynds. The Hynds Building incorporated an enormously advanced design for its time. The structure has no interior or exterior supporting walls. Its mass is carried on a steel "I" beam frame, with poured concrete ceilings and floors. In keeping with Mr. Hyndsí wish that the building be fire-proof, no wood was used in its construction. All doors, casings, windows, and frames are metal, as is even the decorative picture rail. However, the metal was painted with a faux wood grain so artistically rendered that, years later, visitors would recall the "beautiful woodwork" in the Hynds, which was, in reality, the work of the artisan. With terra cotta tile exterior cladding, marble wainscoating and mosaic tile floors the Hynds Building is a fine example of the work of renowned Wyoming architect William Dubois.
